Witch Doctor
Holy cow, y'all. I have seen the future, and its name is Witch Doctor.
In a post on Warren Ellis's Whitechapel this morning I was introduced to Brandon Seifert and Lukas Ketner's Witch Doctor. I'm not sure how I missed learning about it before now, but I'm glad I finally have.
As I mentioned a week or two ago, I've been gradually reading my way through all of silver age Marvel, and most recently finished up the full run of Ditko's Doctor Strange. After reading the eight-page story that Seifert has posted to Whitechapel, I've decided that Witch Doctor is the kind of comic Doctor Strange would have been had Stephen Strange continued to act like a medical doctor, instead of just becoming Sorcerer Supreme.
Seifert's script is nice and lean, with loads of cleverness, and Ketner's art reminds me a bit of Rick Veitch in places, of my pal Bill Willingham in others, all without being derivative in the slightest. The set up reminds me a bit of Jeff Parker and Tom Fowler's late-lamented Mysterius the Unfathomable, but that only heightens my interest.
In addition to the eight-pager up on Whitechapel, on the official site there's the sixteen-page "First Incision," which I'm on my way to check out now.

Your Doctor Strange comparison is more apt than you probably know. The entire comic actually came from me asking myself, "What if you took Doctor Strange's origin, and played it straight?" I really liked the idea of a Dr. House-style "Dr. Jerk" character given magical powers and tasked with saving the world, but approaching it all the same way he's always approached things — with science and cynicism.
Thanks again for saying nice things about us on the internet, and I hope you enjoyed First Incision too! (It's much rougher, visually and script-wise, but I think its got some good stuff in it — like the monster.) I'll try to keep you in the loop as we do more stories!

Lots of talented folks up there in Portland these days. I'm going to have to come up to visit sometime.

You really should! It's a pretty incredible town as far as talent goes. Just the variety of folks who turned out for Jeff and Steve Lieber's UNDERGROUND book release party a couple weeks ago was starting.
I hope you get a chance to check out FIRST INCISION. We're hoping to have another couple short stories out and online before the end of the year, and we're making some very promising headway with getting the book picked up by a house.

I finally had a chance to read First Incision yesterday, Brandon, and thought it was terrific! I hope you find a home for the book, as I'd love to get more Witch Doctor on a regular basis!
Thanks Chris! We're seeing a lot of progress on the publishing front at the moment, so I'm hoping we'll have something to announce before the end of the year.
