Holiday Favorites
Or should that be "favourites"...?
Paul Cornell has polled a bunch of sf/f types on the topic, "what is your favourite Xmas film?" (he used that extra "u" of course) and collected the results on Day 2 of his 12 Blogs of Christmas.
Respondents include John Scalzi, John Picacio, Mike Carey, Mary Robinette Kowal, Lou Anders, Stephen Segal, Shanna Swendson, Jon Courtenay Grimwood, C.E. Murphy, Steven Moffat, Sean Williams, Kim Newman, and my own humble self. (If I had it all to do over, I'd probably have switched to Lou's answer, truth be told.)

I'm a Frank Capra's fan, so probably "It's a Wonderful Life".
But, my favourite (sorry, also using the extra U) holiday movie, any holiday, is "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" that does have a holidayish feeling to it.
And I have a few more, but those two would be high up on my list.

If you've not seen the TV version of "Miracle" you should try and check it out (it's on the dvd edtion we have). It's very smiliar to the oringinal (mainly cut for length), expect that the secene where Kris Kringle hits the HR rep with his cane. In this version it's done in front of a room full of school children, and Kris takes a full swing, like DeNiro in "The Untouchables". It's quite disturbing...
You know, I'm sure I must have seen it at some point, Howard, but it's been so long that I don't really have any clear memories of it. I'll have to give it another shot!
One of my holiday favorites is an old black-and-white episode THE AVENGERS called "Too Many Christmas Trees." Steed and Mrs. Peel are spending several days in the country, at a Dickens-themed Christmas party, while Steed is being targeted by a group of telepathic assassins. It's a good episode, and has this great idealized Christmas story, with a great in-joke. Anyway, nothing says Christmas like telepathic assassins.
I'd completely forgotten about that episode, Bill! I think that was one of the first episodes of the Avengers I saw, and I remember thinking "What the hell is *this*?!"
I may have to hunt that one down and revisit it.
